The Sydney Harbour bridge is one of the most iconic structures of the modern world, well known to Sydney locals as the Coat hanger, the Sydney Harbour Bridge connects the Sydney Central Business District with the north shore of Sydney. The construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge began in 1926 and it took six years to build, finishing in early 1932 and being opened on the 19th March 1932. Along with the Opera House the Sydney Harbour Bridge had a lot of controversy when the bridge was being built. Built during the great depression the Sydney Harbour Bridge was the life blood of many a young labrourer keeping them employed through the hard times. During the construction of the bridge 16 people lost their lives this was mainly due to them falling off into the watery grave below. The height of the harbour bridges main deck to the water is around 50 metres depending on the tide at the time. The Harbour Bridge is 1149 metres in length and 134 metres in height. The pylons on either side of the bridge are basically there for show, as they do not aid the bridge in anyway, these pylons are 89 metres in height and visitors to Sydney can climb up to the top of the Southern pylon and witness the views. Sydney Harbour Boat Tours cruise underneath the Harbour Bridge during its tour and tell its guest many stories about the bridge. After lunch at the Sydney Fish Markets, the Sydney Harbour Boat Tours boat comes back under the bridge on the way to Manly. |
